Since July 2025, the professional lawn care sector in Quebec has been operating under a significantly tighter regulatory framework. Following the provincial government's update to the Pesticides Management Code, the number of active ingredients prohibited for lawn maintenance has increased from 20 to 60. For thousands of contractors across the 160 municipalities directly affected, this new reality means revisiting the products at the core of their maintenance programs.

The challenge goes beyond provincial requirements. Many municipalities still rely on by-laws modelled on frameworks dating back to the 1990s, which draw a rigid distinction between biopesticides and conventional pesticides. As a result, some products approved at the provincial level remain blocked at the municipal level. Finding a product that satisfies provincial requirements, municipal by-laws and client expectations all at once has become a daily challenge for professionals in the field.

WeedOut® Ultra Professional: A Compliant Solution Developed Right Here

Developed right here in Riviere-du-Loup, WeedOut® Ultra Professional reflects more than 40 years of biotechnology expertise at Premier Tech. The product is registered with Health Canada under registration number 32516 pursuant to the Pest Control Products Act.

Its active ingredient, 4-chloroindole-3-acetic acid (4-Cl-IAA), is a plant hormone naturally found in peas and broad beans. When applied to broadleaf weeds, it disrupts their hormonal processes, blocks photosynthesis, and gradually eliminates them down to the root. The surrounding turf is not affected: this is a selective herbicide that targets only the undesirable species listed on the label.

Dandelion and Plantain: The Two Most Problematic Species

In the day-to-day work of professional lawn care, two species account for the vast majority of client complaints.

Dandelion, recognizable by its yellow flowers and wind-dispersed seeds, is by far the species most frequently reported by residential and institutional clients. Broadleaf plantain forms dense rosettes that smother turf and withstand mowing.

WeedOut® Ultra Professional specifically targets these two species with documented, complete control. Field trials show a 96% mortality rate for broadleaf plantain and 82% for dandelion ten weeks after treatment.

The product also controls several other species commonly encountered in professional lawn care, including fall hawkbit, hawkweed, cinquefoil and black medic. Though less visible, these species contribute to the deterioration of a lawn's overall appearance and can become a source of complaints if left unmanaged.

One Application Per Season, and It Makes All the Difference

This is one of the most practical advantages of the product in the field. In the vast majority of cases, a single application per season is sufficient to achieve effective control of the targeted species. Effects are visible as early as 24 hours after application, and complete weed death occurs within 4 to 8 weeks.

For professionals currently juggling multiple products in restricted areas, this reduction in the number of applications translates into a direct gain: fewer site visits, less product used, less time per job.

As part of a well-structured maintenance program, WeedOut® Ultra Professional can also complement an initial broad-area treatment. Spot treatment is then reserved for areas where persistent weeds remain, optimizing both product use and time on site.

Available in 2 x 10 L jugs, the product comes in a 10X concentrated formulation, that is, one part product to nine parts water, and covers up to 24,973 m² per unit. Its format is designed for professionals treating large areas.

Beyond the "Organic versus Synthetic" Debate

Persistent confusion around the notion of "organic" in municipal by-laws remains one of the biggest obstacles for professionals in the sector. Carl Servent, owner of Pelouse GMS, summed it up well during an interview on QUB Radio on May 5, 2026: "Cities operate on the idea that if a product is organic, it is acceptable, and if it is not, it is automatically considered dangerous."

This is precisely where the regulatory positioning of WeedOut® Ultra Professional makes a difference. Health Canada has assigned it a non-conventional herbicide classification, recognizing that its active ingredient differs from traditional synthetic herbicides. This classification allows it to be used in several settings where conventional pesticides are restricted: golf courses, municipal parks, cemeteries, rights-of-way, sports fields and sod production. Once sprayed and dried, the product is safe for people and pets.

A Patented Product, an Exclusive Technology

WeedOut® Ultra Professional is a patented product developed in our own laboratories. Founded in 1923, Premier Tech brings more than 40 years of biotechnology expertise to its formulations. For professionals who integrate it into their programs, this patent means access to an exclusive technology that competitors cannot replicate in the Canadian market.

WeedOut® Ultra Professional

What This Means for Your Maintenance Program

To be straightforward: WeedOut® Ultra Professional is not a universal solution. It is designed for spot treatment, does not prevent new weeds from emerging, and delivers its best results when used as part of a comprehensive maintenance program.

What it does offer, and what is less common in this segment, is a regulatory classification that facilitates use across most restricted areas, verifiable efficacy data on Canada's most problematic weed species, and an application program designed to reduce the number of passes required on each job site.

In a market where it is increasingly difficult to find products that satisfy both provincial and municipal requirements, that is a position worth noting.
