"We have to reduce environmental footprint in peat moss production"
Friday, June 6, 2014
For 50 years now, The Québec Peat Moss Producers Association (APTHQ) is promoting peat moss in the horticultural industry. The members of this association are peat moss producers, who work together on the restoration of peat land, doing research on peatland management and water quality. Five years ago they created a certification for responsible and sustainable peat moss, called VeriFlora® Responsibly Managed Peatland.
This certification insures the client that the peat moss is produced under good condition for the workers and the environment. “Every activity has an impact on the environment, but it’s our purpose to reduce the environmental footprint in peat moss production,” says Geneviève Potvin, Executive Manager at APTHQ. “The association works on peatland restoration after the harvesting period. We have done this together with the Peatland Ecology Research Group for twenty years now and we’ve seen a lot of improvement.” Read more on Hortidaily.
